Exploring the Freedom Trail Like a Local: Your Guide to Boston’s Revolutionary History

The iconic Freedom trail in Boston is a must do for every visitor. It stretches over 2.5 miles across the city and connects 16 historic sites that played important roles in the American revolution. It is more than a sightseeing route, it’s a walk through the birth of a nation and it lets visitors step into the lives of the revolutionaries who shaped America’s history.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned Bostonian, the Freedom Trail offers something new every time. As someone who lived in Boston for many years, I have walked and explored the trail numerous times with family and friends and I want to give you some insights to make your trip to Boston a unique and unforgettable experience. With this guide I want to explain the different options for exploring the Freedom Trail and give you some pro tips along the way.

How to explore the Freedom Trail

There are four main options to experience the Freedom Trail:

1. Interactive Relive 1776 tour

2. Self-guided walking tour

3. Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour

4. Guided walking tour

I will explain my experiences with these options and give you some recommendations to help you make the best choice for your needs.

Here's how you can explore the Freedom Trail like a local and make the most out of your trip in 2025:

1. Interactive Relive 1776 tour: a modern and immersive experience

The Boston based startup See Reality offers a completely new and my absolute favorite way to experience the Freedom Trail. With augmented reality technology they bring history back to life right before your eyes. The experience is called Relive 1776 and it is both educational and entertaining - perfect for families, history buffs and technology enthusiasts.

This tour allows visitors to relive important historic events that led to the American revolution in chronological order. Along Boston’s Freedom trail you can interact with important figures like Paul Revere and Samuel Adams, and even fire a historically accurate cannon in realistic augmented reality. It’s a fun, immersive way to learn about Boston’s history and America’s fight for independence. Another great thing about it: it can easily be combined with your self-guided tour to let you experience Boston at your own pace and without being stuck in a big tour group. The experiences can be easily pre-booked online on See Reality’s website or you can just walk up to their Relive 1776 stand in Boston Common.

Highlights: See the Sons of Liberty come back to life under an old oak tree in Boston common, interact with British redcoats and learn about the Boston Massacre at the old state house, see Paul Revere ride off on his horse and say his famous quote “the British are coming”, and participate in the legendary Battle of Bunker Hill by firing a realistic canon.

Pro tip: At the start of the Freedom trail in Boston Common Relive 1776 offers a completely free look into the past where you can try on traditional colonial style clothing and take pictures with their Revolutionary Runway experience.

2. Self-guided walking tour

The self-guided tour is the most flexible and affordable way to experience the Freedom Trail. There are various digital tools available that give you valuable information for each stop along the way without being stuck in a big tour group. The red-bricks on the ground make it easy for you to follow the trail across the city.

My favorite thing about this option is that it lets you explore the trail at your own pace. Without the fixed starting times you can avoid the crowds, have flexible food and bathroom breaks, and you can take as much time at each stop as you like. However, walking the entire trail in one day can get pretty tiring which is why I recommend splitting the tour into two days.

You can check out my Ultimate Self-guided Freedom trail tour, which is another blog post that shows you a map, historical information, and old pictures to help you walk the freedom trail at your own pace.

Recommendation: Combine your self-guided tour with the Relive1776 experiences by See Reality to see the events leading to the American Revolution come to life and make the trail a more immersive experience.

Pro tip: Start early in the morning to avoid the crowds and wear comfortable shoes.

Self-guided audio tours are provided by the national park service.

3. Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour

The Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour is a convenient way to explore the city of Boston, especially if you don't want to walk much or want to see the main sights in a short time. It is an ideal option if you want to combine the freedom of exploring sights on your own with getting guided commentary during the drives. This makes it a great option for families with young children or older travelers.

However, it is not a perfect way to explore the Freedom trail because not all the stops of the Freedom trail are accessible by bus. Also the stops along the bus route do not uphold the chronological order of the Freedom trail which makes it lose some of the intended purpose of the trail.

Recommendation: The Relive 1776 experiences by See Reality can easily be combined with the Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour and bring a memorable and interesting change to your sightseeing day.

Pro tip: Combining the bus tour with walking small parts of the Freedom trail reduces the hiking and makes all the stops of the trail available at your own pace.

The most popular bus tour is the old town trolley tour.

4. Guided walking tour

A guided tour is your best option, if you want to learn more about the history and significance of the Freedom Trail from a real person that adds anecdotes and leads the way along the path. Also, many of these tours are led by costumed guides who appear as historical figures, which makes it a fun experience especially for children. During the tours you get a professional guide who adds stories and historical context to the visited locations.

Personally, I am not the biggest fan of big tours because I feel more limited by the pace of the group and especially on weekends and holidays the tours get very crowded. Also, many of the tours do not cover the entire Freedom trail and you miss out on exciting parts of the trail.

Recommendation: Book an immersive VIP Relive 1776 tour on See Reality’s website to get a tour for the entire trail, do it at your own pace and be in a very small group.

Pro tip: You can choose a free walking tour and decide yourself what you want to pay after the tour by tipping the guide whatever amount you feel is appropriate.

The Freedom Trail is more than just a walk - it's a journey into the past that takes you to the roots of American history. Whether you opt for a guided tour, a self-guided hike or See Reality's innovative Relive 1776 AR experiences: This iconic trail will make your visit to Boston unforgettable.
