Boston's culinary scene is a mix of tradition and modern international cuisine. Besides fresh seafood, you can find anything from classic Italian dishes in the North End to modern gourmet restaurants in the Seaport District. Whether you're a foodie or simply want to try the local specialties, Boston offers variety of culinary experiences.

As someone who lived in Boston for many years, I have tried a lot of the city’s restaurants and I want to share Boston’s most popular food spots and my personal favorite restaurants. To be completely honest, eating out can be very expensive in Boston and it’s not always worth the money. I want to help you filter through the noise and find the best options for all budgets and also share places that are actually worth the money. Here are the food experiences that you can’t miss during your stay in Boston.

1. Fresh seafood: the best oyster bars and lobster rolls

Boston is famous for its fresh seafood, especially lobster rolls, oysters, and clam chowder are a must-try.

Best places for seafood:

The Barking crab (Seaport) - Famous for its lobster rolls and great atmosphere at the waterfront.

Boston Sail Loft - Located right by the harbor, this is a popular place with a great selection of seafood.

Union Oyster House - The oldest restaurant in Boston, serving fresh seafood since 1826.

Pro tip: Try the classic New England Clam Chowder for free at a small sampling table inside the Quincy market hall.

2. Bar and pub culture: historic taverns and classic drinks

Boston is well-known for its historic pub culture. Try one of the many New England craft beers and have some classic pub food while watching sports in the city’s centuries-old taverns.

Best Pubs:

Bell in Hand Tavern - The oldest tavern in the US with a lively atmosphere and live music.

21st Amendment - A cozy bar that's perfect for a relaxing evening.

Emmet's Irish Pub - An authentic pub with excellent Irish coffee

Pro Tip: Many bars offer special happy hour deals - perfect to save some money.

3. North End: Italy's culinary home in Boston

The North End is often referred to as “Little Italy” and it is a paradise for lovers of Italian cuisine. Here you'll find authentic pizza and pasta, homemade cannoli, and traditional dishes that have been served for generations.

Must-try spots:

Mamma Maria - An upscale Italian restaurant overlooking historic Paul Revere Square.

Giacomo's - A small, popular restaurant with excellent seafood pasta.

Mike's Pastry vs. Modern Pastry - Two rival bakeries battling it out for the title of best cannoli in town.

Pro tip: The restaurants in the North End often have a long line of people waiting for a table. To make the wait a more fun time, you can put your name down for a restaurant in the early evening and try See Reality’s Relive 1776 experience at the Paul Revere house while you wait for your table. In the AR experience you can see Paul Revere get on his horse to start his midnight ride where he says the famous phrase “the British are coming”. Get more information about Relive 1776 on See Reality’s website.

4. Seaport District: modern and trendy

The Seaport District is one of Boston's most modern neighborhoods and it offers a variety of upscale restaurants with innovative cuisine and breathtaking views of the water. In this modern part of the city, most restaurants offer very high quality food that is actually worth the money.

Best restaurants in Seaport:

The Smoke Shop – A delicious BBQ spot that serves smoked meat trays with flair.

Committee – This mediterranean restaurant serves incredible Greek mezze at their different lounges and bars.

Harpoon Brewery Seaport – Go for a brewery tour and try the freshly brewed beer and a delicious pretzel in their tap room.

Pro tip: Reservations are often required at Seaport - especially on weekends

5. Upscale restaurants that offer a special experience

If you are looking for a special experience, incredible food, and amazing drinks, these following restaurants are a must visit. They are a more pricey option but I always found they were well worth the money.

Yvonne's (downtown): A stylish restaurant with creative dishes and excellent cocktails. This place has an unforgettable atmosphere and if you get very lucky, you get seated in their secret speakeasy.

Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar (Back Bay): A Mexican restaurant with a unique atmosphere and great margaritas.

Pro tip: Just grab some drinks at the bar and a small plate from their tapas menu to experience the special place and spend less money.

6. The Tall Ship: Food trucks, drinks, and city views

For a special and very local experience, take a quick Uber or Subway ride out to the Tall ship. This oyster bar on a real sailboat is one of my absolute favorite spots in Boston. Besides fresh seafood, the area by the water offers food trucks with tasty drinks, various food options, and stunning views of the city. I recommend trying the Lobster roll, a tasty frozen drink, and playing some Cornball.

Pro tip: Visit in the late afternoon and watch the sun set over the water while you enjoy a drink at the bar on the sailboat. Don’t forget to bring a jacket since it can get windy out by the water.

7. The sweet finale: Boston cream pie

No culinary tour of Boston is complete without trying the famous Boston Cream Pie - a delicious pie with vanilla cream filling and chocolate frosting.

Best places for desserts:

Omni Parker House - The hotel where the Boston Cream Pie was invented.

Flour Bakery - Famous for their sticky buns and other sweet treats.

Tatte Bakery - One of the most popular bakeries in the city with great coffee and cake specialties.

Whether you're looking for traditional Italian dishes, fresh seafood, or innovative gourmet cuisine, Boston offers an incredible variety of culinary experiences. From historic taverns to modern fine dining restaurants, there is something to suit every taste.
