Breweries, Bars & Nightlife: Boston's best addresses for an unforgettable night out

New England's craft beer culture is world famous. Tasting local beers in one of the many pubs and going on a brewery tour is a must to experience the local culture. Besides beer, Boston also offers a variety of cocktail lounges and lively nightclubs. From traditional Irish pubs to modern speakeasies and live music spots, every night owl will find the perfect venue. To make sure you have a good time going out, I want to give you some recommendations for my favorite spots in Boston.

1. Brewery tours: A paradise for craft beer lovers

Boston's craft beer scene is one of the best in the US, and a brewery tour is definitely a must for every beer lover.

Top Breweries in the city:

Sam Adams Brewery & Tap Room (Jamaica Plain) - Experience a guided tour of Boston's most famous brewery and sample limited-edition beers only available on site.

Harpoon Brewery (Seaport) - Known for its freshly tapped beers and chill atmosphere in the brewpub.

Pro Tip: Before trying the beer that was named after Samuel Adams, you can actually see him come back to life right in front of you in the Relive 1776 augmented reality experiences by See Reality. Learn more about the immersive Relive 1776 experiences on See Reality’s website.

2. Distillery tours: for spirit lovers

When you think of rum production, you probably imagine a Caribbean island, however, it is less known that there is a long history of rum production right here in Boston. Instead of sugarcane, the Boston rum is made from molasses, which makes for a very special and distinct taste.

A local distillery I recommend for a visit to learn more about this and to sample different local spirits is the Bully Boy Distillery. This family-run distillery offers tours and tastings of award-winning whiskey, rum and gin.

Distillery tours can be booked on their website.

3. Cocktail bars & speakeasies: secret and stylish drinks with a special atmosphere

Boston has a thriving cocktail scene, with elegant lounges, hidden speakeasies and creative bartenders creating unique drinks. Best cocktail bars & speakeasies:

Yvonne's (Downtown) - A modern speakeasy with excellent cocktails, upscale atmosphere and delicious food.

The Tall Ship (East Boston) - An open-air bar on a docked sailboat with street food and breathtaking views of the Boston skyline.

Lookout Rooftop Bar (Seaport) - Have some drinks with one of the best views over Boston.

Lolita (Back Bay) - A unique mexican bar with a mysterious ambience and tasty cocktails.

Roxanne’s – A small, modern bar with fun interior and great drinks.

Pro tip: Reservations are recommended for many speakeasies, especially on weekends.

4. Live music & nightclubs: where the night turns into day

If you’re looking for live music and dancing it can get a little challenging to chose the right spot from the many options. The following bars and clubs have been the most reliable spots to have a great night out in Boston:

Howl at the Moon (Downtown) - A fun bar with live music and good drinks. Later at night it turns into club atmosphere.

Scorpion (Seaport) – A modern, lively club with EDM, House, and Latin music.

House of Blues (Fenway) - Perfect for rock and indie concerts in a legendary atmosphere.

Big Night Live (TD Garden) - A modern club with regular DJ events and exclusive VIP areas.

Pro tip: Many clubs have a dress code policy, so check beforehand and come early to avoid the long lines at the door.

5. Classic Boston pubs: cozy atmosphere & local beers

If you're more into a relaxed pub atmosphere, Boston has plenty of traditional bars and Irish pubs with historic charm. Best pubs:

The Bell in Hand Tavern - The oldest tavern in America with a traditional atmosphere and live music.

21st Amendment - A cozy bar near Boston Common, perfect for a relaxing beer.

Emmet's Irish Pub - An authentic Irish pub with Guinness on tap and traditional food.

Pro tip: Pubs are great places to have a conversation with the locals. Order a local beer, watch sports, and soak up the atmosphere.

6. Beer gardens: Perfect for afternoon drinks in the summer

A very popular thing to do in the summer is grabing a cold beer at one of the many beer gardens across the city. They offer local beers, snacks, and often have a stage with live music. It is a must-do when you’re visiting in the summer and want to join the locals for their after-work drink. My favorite beer gardens:

Trillium: They have many locations across the city where they serve their delicious beers, many of which are locally brewed. My favorite spots are the seaport rooftop location and the Fenway beer garden.

Harpoon: There are many locations across the city where Harpoon sets up a seasonal pop-up beer garden (for example in Boston Common next to the Boylston subway entrance). Many of their beers are locally brewed in seaport and the beer gardens offer a chill vibe with live music.

Whether you want to sample craft beer, have some drinks in a stylish cocktail bar or go out to dance, Boston has a big selection of nightlife. Explore hidden speakeasies, enjoy live music or party in one of the city's best clubs.
