Welcome to Boston, where history meets cutting edge innovation, and where you can find colonial buildings next to modern skyscrapers. Whether you're retracing the footsteps of America's founders on the Freedom Trail, feasting on delicious food in Seaport, or hopping on a ferry to a harbor island, Boston is full of experiences that are waiting to be uncovered in 2025.

As someone who’s lived here for many years, I’ve walked these cobblestone streets in every season and discovered hidden gems you can’t find in the usual guidebook tips. This blog is your local’s guide to making the most of your time in Boston. I will give you helpful tips, insights, and recommendations to my favorite spots.

Below, you’ll find an overview of everything Boston has to offer, including history, food, culture, nightlife, and weekend escapes outside of the city. Each section in this blog post links to a more detailed post with maps, recommendations, and insider tips. Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning to discover something new, consider this your go-to site for Boston in 2025.

1. Walking the Freedom Trail

The Freedom trail is an iconic sightseeing route that connects 16 historic sites across Boston. It lets visitors step into the lives of the revolutionaries who shaped America’s history by following the story of their fight for freedom.

To explore the trail, you have different options available: You can walk the trail on your own, book a guided tour, or hop on and off a trolley bus. I will explain more about the different options in my guide for Exploring the Freedom Trail Like a Local. If you already know that you want to avoid the crowds of a tour group and save some money by going for a self-guided tour, check out my Ultimate Self-guided Freedom Trail Tour, where I give explanations to each stop along the trail, show pictures of what it looked like back in colonial times, and give helpful tips and recommendations.

I also have a special recommendation for everyone trying to make the Freedom Trail a truly unforgettable experience. A local Boston startup developed an immersive tour called Relive 1776, where they use augmented reality technology to bring history back to life. With their experiences located at important stops on the Freedom trail, you can take part in the historic events that led to the American Revolution as if you where there. Relive 1776 is a must-try for visitors of all ages and it can be easily combined with the self-guided and also the hop on hop off bus tour. To learn more about Relive 1776 and to book tickets for their tour, check out See Reality’s website.

2. Museums and Cultural Treasures

Boston's museums and cultural gems go far beyond the Freedom trail. With hands-on learning at the Museum of Science, art inside a Venetian-style palace at the Gardner Museum, and interactive storytelling at the Boston Tea Party Ship, Boston offers something for everyone.

My special recommendation for anyone interested in influential Bostonians and politics is the JFK Museum and Presidential library. This modern museum lets you walk through the important steps of the life of JFK and learn about the former president while walking on the actual carpet from his oval office. Tickets can be booked on their website.

If you're interested in experiencing history in new ways, make sure to check out the immersive Relive 1776 experiences by See Reality that are offered at cultural sites like the Old State House and the Bunker Hill Monument.

3. Restaurants and Culinary Delights in the different Neighborhoods

Boston’s food scene is a mix of classic New England flavors and global cuisines. From lobster rolls by the harbor to upscale cocktail lounges with small plates, there’s something for every taste and every budget.

Start in the North End, Boston’s Little Italy, where the narrow streets are packed with pasta, seafood, and cannoli. The wait times can be pretty long for dinner, so try to get a reservation. (Pro tip: do the Relive 1776 experience at Paul Revere’s house while waiting for your table.)

For modern dining, the Seaport District is where Boston’s culinary creativity shines. You’ll find upscale restaurants with sleek design and harbor views. Try Committee for Mediterranean mezze or The Smoke Shop for award-winning BBQ.

And for casual bites, you can’t beat Boston’s traditional Irish pubs, the food truck scene along the Greenway, or the summer atmosphere of The Tall Ship, a floating bar with oysters, drinks, and cornhole games by the water.

4. Breweries, Bars & Nightlife

Boston’s craft beers and breweries are world famous, making a brewery tour a must-do for every beer lover. But also the hidden speakeasies cocktail lounges, and traditional Irish pubs are a big part of Boston’s culture. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual pint, a craft cocktail, or live music, you’ll find great spots in every part of the city. Some of these bars even have a bit of history woven in, especially if you’re combining your evening plans with a stop at Relive 1776 to see Sam Adams come to life.

My top recommendation for a unique and tasty cocktail is the restaurant and cocktail bar called Yvonne’s. While it is more upscale, the excellent cocktails and special atmosphere make it one of my favorite spots in Boston. For a more budget-friendly and traditional Boston experience, I recommend the Bell in Hand Tavern, which is the oldest tavern in America.

5. Exploring the Waterfront & Harbor Islands

Boston’s maritime history is just as rich as its revolutionary past. You can spend an afternoon walking the Harborwalk, hop on a ferry to Cape Cod, or one of the many Harbor Islands, and enjoy seafood and skyline views at a dockside restaurant. Families will especially enjoy the New England Aquarium**,** where you can see many cool fish and animals like penguins, sea turtles, and even sharks and rays. If you want to save some money, you can get a completely free view into the home of the their sea lions from the publicly accessible waterfront area at the back of the aquarium building.

6. Family-Friendly Activities & Parks

With parks, interactive museums, and boat tours, Boston is a fantastic destination for kids. Ride the swan boats in the Public Garden, meet penguins at the New England Aquarium, or explore hands-on exhibits at the Children’s Museum. Tech-loving kids (and adults!) will love stepping into Boston’s past with the immersive Relive 1776 experiences by See Reality. It is a favorite among families and allows for a fun way to explore Boston and learn about the city’s interesting history. As a great representation of the city’s modern and innovative parts, it may even inspire kids to attend one of Boston’s many great universities like MIT, Harvard, Northeastern, BU, or Babson, just like the people who started See Reality and created the Relive 1776 experiences did.

7. Sports, Stadiums & Local Pride

Bostonians are very passionate about their teams and love watching sports. Whether it's catching a Red Sox game at Fenway, cheering on the Bruins at TD Garden, or just watching the Patriots in a packed pub. Even if you’re not a sports fan, the stadium tours and game-day energy are an incredible experience for everyone.

8. Day Trips & Weekend Getaways

When have some extra days in Boston and it’s time to venture out, the city’s location makes it easy. Take a quick ferry to Provincetown, catch a train to Salem, or drive to the White Mountains. From vineyard tours on the South Coast to skiing escapes in the winter, we’ve got ideas to make your New England explorations memorable and fun. I’ve also added some creative options, like using See Reality’s website to explore lost historical sites from around the world without leaving the city.

Final Thoughts: Boston, Then and Now

What I like most about Boston is how it blends the past with the future. One minute you’re standing at a 250-year-old historical site, and the next you’re firing a virtual cannon in augmented reality. You can see historical buildings right next to modern skyscrapers and every day there is something new to explore.

Whether you’re here for a weekend or a full vacation, I hope this blog helps you discover the best of Boston and maybe even fall in love with it like I did.

📍Stay tuned: New posts and updates will be added all year long, including seasonal tips, hidden gems, and more local favorites.

Let your adventure begin.
Welcome to Boston.
